Employer Requirement - Form I-9 Updated 11-7-2007

An employer is required to verify the identity and employment eligibility of all employees hired in the U.S. after November 6, 1986, by completing the Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification for each. Some of the most significant changes to Form I-9 include:

The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) released an updated version of the Form I-9 and M-274, Handbook for Employers, Instructions for Completing the Form I-9. The new form was released on November 7, 2007, and a notice was published in the Federal Register last November allowing employers until December 26, 2007 to transition to the new form. Employers who fail to use the new form after this date will be subject to penalties.
