Richard J. Whipple, Jr., CPA, MTax, CEO
Rick has been an owner of WhippleWood CPAs for over two decades. During the last five years, he has successfully managed the growth and strategy of the firm in his role as CEO. He has been responsible for positioning the firm to deliver high quality tax, business assurance, and consulting services for high net worth individuals and business owners located throughout the United States and abroad. Rick is responsible for the day-to-day management of the firm and he consults in general business areas, strategic tax planning, and issues facing emerging businesses.
Rick graduated from the University of Colorado with a degree in accounting. He subsequently completed his Master's Degree in tax law at the University of Denver. He specializes in various areas of tax law and is an expert in complex tax planning, accounting and tax issues unique to franchise businesses, and IRC section 1031 exchanges. Rick has served as a seminar leader on presentations addressing passive activity rules and planning opportunities using employee stock ownership plans (ESOPs). Rick is also a student of leadership and management principles.
Throughout his life, Rick has participated in a variety of civic and charitable functions. He was a volunteer head coach for Little League Baseball. He also has been the treasurer for a variety of political and non-profit organizations. These include his father’s campaign for the Colorado RTD board, Fred Green’s campaign for State Representative, the Acacia Fraternity Alumni Advisory Board, and the Ronald McDonald House. At the Ronald McDonald House, he provided oversight over a $5 million new construction project, and a capital campaign that raised $2 million of funding for the project. Most recently, Rick served on the Board of the Southern Rockies Ecosystem Project. He has supported a variety of political and social causes through his volunteer work and cash contributions.
He is a member of the Colorado Society of Certified Public Accountants, American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (special member of the Tax Section), the Sierra Club, The American Alpine Institute and the Access Fund.
He currently resides in Morrison, CO with his wife and two young children. In his spare time you can find him playing with his children, climbing rocks, surfing, or exploring the high mountains of the world.
John M. Byrne, CPA/ABV, Business Assurance Director
John has over 25 years of experience in auditing and consulting with private companies and their management teams. He has a strong background in evaluating financial operations and the related internal control environment, combined with a robust knowledge of financial reporting and US GAAP.
Originally from Ohio, John spent the last four years in Arizona, most recently as an audit manager with Moss Adams LLP. Moss Adams is the 11th largest accounting and consulting firm in the United States with 20 offices and over 1,900 employees. His experience with Moss Adams includes managing audits for publicly traded companies in various industries including manufacturing and distribution, technology, and natural resources. He has extensive experience with companies in the development stage and has a strong knowledge of related equity and financing challenges for these emerging companies.
John relocated to Colorado in October 2008 and joined Whipplewood CPAs in February 2009. His role with the firm is to oversee the delivery of business assurance services and assist privately-held businesses and their owners in identifying and addressing profitability, exit strategy, and cash flow issues. He will also provide a variety of consulting services that assist clients to better manage their business and increase its value.
While in Ohio, he was associated with a local CPA firm where he planned, supervised, and performed audits for clients operating in various industries including information technology, manufacturing, construction contractors, lodging and hospitality, multi-family housing, and not-for-profit entities. He also provided litigation support, working with attorneys and their clients to develop damage calculations and business valuation reports. He has been retained as a consultant and expert witness on matters involving professional malpractice and forensic accounting matters. He worked with estate planning attorneys and performed appraisals required for gift and estate tax purposes, mergers and acquisitions, buy-sell agreements, domestic relations, and shareholder disputes.
John received a bachelor's degree from Ohio University, and master's of Accounting and Financial Information Systems from Cleveland State University. John has served as a seminar leader for the Cleveland Bar Association’s continuing legal education program lecturing on estate planning and business appraisal topics. He taught Intermediate and Advanced Accounting courses at Myers University in Cleveland, Ohio.
John is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Arizona Society of Certified Public Accountants. John received the Accredited in Business Valuation designation (ABV) of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants in 1998. He is a former director of the Estate Planning Council of Cleveland and a past board member and treasurer of SPACES, a non-profit arts organization.
Paul M. Egan, CPA, MT, Director of Tax Services
Paul has been involved in public accounting since 1988, most recently with one of Colorado's largest public accounting and consulting firms, where he served as tax manager before joining WhippleWood CPAs as Director of Tax Services in July 2009.
Paul provides tax consulting and compliance services to individuals, closely-held businesses and tax exempt entities. He serves clients in a variety of industries with expertise in real estate development, manufacturing, wholesale distribution, professional service firms, and non-profit organizations. He oversees the delivery of tax services for the firm and is involved in strategic development and growth of the firm's personnel and services.
Paul holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from Regis University and a Master's of Taxation degree from the University of Denver. Paul has been a presenter at the Rocky Mountain Endowment Conference and has addressed the business comunity on a variety of tax-related topics. He is a member of the Colorado Society of Certified Public Accountants and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. He is active in a number of community organizations, including serving as the current Vice-president Elect of The University Hills Rotary Club and Treasurer of The Adoption Exchange. He is a recipient of the "CPAs Who Make a Difference" Award from the Colorado Society of CPAs, awarded to individuals in the accounting profession dedicated to community service.
Mona is a principal in the tax service area of WhippleWood CPAs and has been involved in public accounting since 1999. She has extensive experience in providing accounting and business advisory services to individuals and closely-held businesses. She has worked extensively with pass-through entity and corporation structures and has assisted clients with developing exit planning strategies. She services clients in a variety of areas including auto dealers, franchisor accounting and taxation, real estate, dental and medical practices and professional services.
Mona has a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from the University of Colorado, Boulder, and a Master's in Accounting from the University of Colorado, Denver. Her professional affiliations include memberships in CIADA and NIADA. Additionally she is currently active in numerous industry and community organizations.
Mona has recently been named as a 2009 FIVE STAR: Best in Client Satisfaction Wealth Manager. This will be published in the September issue of 5280 magazine and ColoradoBiz magazine.
Mona is a Colorado native and resides in Lone Tree, Colorado with her husband, two small children and Irish Setter.
George has been endorsed as an expert witness on tax, financial and accounting matters for various Metro Denver judicial districts. He has also served as a Court appointed Receiver for the Jefferson County Courts. Prior to joining WhippleWood CPAs, George was affiliated with PriceWaterhouseCoopers, LLC and Williams Hoge & Co., P.C.
George earned a Bachelor of Business Management and a Masters in Higher Education from the University of Southern California and a Masters in Accounting from the University of Denver. He is a member of the Colorado Society of Certified Public Accountants and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. He also serves as a Trustee for the Denver Lions Foundation.
